This morning there’s snow everywhere. We remark on it.
You tell me you didn’t sleep well. I say
I didn’t either. You had a terrible night. “Me too.”
We’re extraordinarily calm and tender with each other
as if sensing the other’s rickety state of mind.
As if we knew what the other was feeling. We don’t,
of course. We never do. No matter.
It’s the tenderness I care about. That’s the gift
this morning that moves and holds me.
Same as every morning.

The gift, Raymond Carver

Stamattina c’è neve dovunque. Ci facciamo sopra dei commenti.
Mi dici che non hai dormito bene. Dico che
neanche io. Tu hai avuto una nottata terribile. “Anch’io”.
Siamo straordinariamente calmi e teneri l’uno con l’altra,
come se ognuno di noi percepisse la fragilità mentale dell’altro.
Come se sapessimo cosa l’altro prova. Non è così,
naturalmente. Non è mai così. Non importa.
È della tenerezza che m’importa. Questo è il dono
che stamattina mi commuove e sostiene.
Al pari di ogni mattina.

Il dono, Raymond Carver
